CS2 Trust Factor Guide (2026)

The Trust Factor is the hidden matchmaking reputation system used by Valve in CS2. It divides players into groups according to their “trustworthiness” based on a few metrics. According to Valve, TF is calculated by examining a user's past experience in Counter-Strike 2 and on Steam. This means that your reports and bans, account age and purchases, chat messages, and play history all contribute to a hidden score.

Having a high Trust Factor means that you are a good, legitimate player, and having a low Trust Factor means that your account has cheating or toxicity issues (even if they are not true). For instance, players with high Trust Factor get fair, active, and non-toxic players and opponents, while players with low Trust Factor get more cheaters, toxics, and leavers.

How to Check Your Trust Factor

CS2 Trust Factor in CS2 from green/good to yellow/mid to red/bad on a black background

While we know about the existence of the Trust Factor, Valve has shown us no direct way of measuring it. However, there are a few ways to get an idea of where you stand.

The green/yellow/red notification system is the best indicator. When you queue with a friend, CS2 may give you a notification saying that one of the players has a "significantly lower trust factor" than the other. If your friends are getting this warning when they play with you, it means that your trust factor is low.

Third-party sites like FACEIT and some Steam stat trackers offer rough trust factor indicators based on account data, but none of these have direct API access to Valve's system - treat them as estimates, not facts.

The quality of your lobbies is the best real-world indicator. If you are running into obvious cheaters, smurfs, griefers, and very toxic players even at normal ranks, your trust factor is likely pulling the quality of your lobbies down.

"Looking to Play" Method: There's also another way of checking the Trust Factor, which has not been proved or disproved so far. When you open CS, on the right side, you have a window saying "Looking to Play". Lots of people state that if the number is high (20), that means you have a high trust factor. On the other hand, if the number is very low, that means your trust factor is very low.

Why Trust Factor Matters

Trust factor directly controls the matchmaking pool you're placed into. The higher your trust factor, the more likely you are to be matched with:

  • Legitimate, long-standing Steam accounts
  • Players with clean VAC and overwatch records
  • Players who rarely receive behavior reports
  • People who complete matches without abandoning

A low trust factor will basically lock you into a degraded matchmaking experience, no matter what your skill level is. You can be a Global Elite with a low trust factor and still end up in a lobby full of cheaters. This is fully intentional, as Valve separates potentially problematic accounts to minimize the effect on the rest of the community.

What Affects the Trust Factor

Although Valve has never released the actual formula, the blog posts and community research suggest that the following things are known or suspected to affect the formula.

Positive factors that increase your trust factor are:

  • The age and reputation of your Steam account
  • The number of hours played on Steam (not just CS2)
  • Having a verified phone number associated with your account
  • Owning multiple legitimate games on Steam
  • Having a good purchase history
  • Finishing games without leaving early
  • Earning commendations
  • Being rarely reported by other players
  • Having Prime Status in CS2.

Negative factors that decrease your trust factor are:

  • Having a large number of cheater/grief reports
  • Having a VAC ban or game ban on any game (not CS2)
  • Leaving games frequently
  • Being kicked often
  • Having a very new Steam account with little history
  • Having a phone number that has been associated with banned accounts
  • Playing with friends who have low trust (this will temporarily lower your lobby's trust factor).

Do your best to keep the image of your account as favorable as possible to improve your trust factor.

How to Improve Your Trust Factor

Improving your trust factor is a slow process - there's no quick fix, and Valve deliberately makes it hard to game. This is what actually works.

The best things you can do are to maintain clean behavior (don't grief, don't abandon, don't spew slurs in chat), to verify your phone number with Steam if you haven't already, and to play without getting reports. Adding Steam account age and game diversity is also a good idea, as Valve takes your overall Steam presence into account as a trust factor.

Don't play with low-trust-factor friends if you're trying to improve your own, as this will lower your lobby quality. Getting commendations from teammates is a small help, so playing in a way that gets teammates to commend you is a good idea anyway. If you've been reported frequently, the system takes time to re-evaluate you. Consistently clean behavior over weeks and months is the only reliable path upward.

Common Misconceptions

"Buying Prime fixes everything"

Prime Status helps, but it's one input among many. A Prime account with bad behavior can still have a terrible trust factor.

"VAC bans only affect the game they were issued in"

False. A VAC ban on any game on your account negatively affects the trust factor across all Valve games.

"You can reset your trust factor with a new account"

Creating a smurf to escape a low trust factor lobby is against Valve's ToS, and new accounts actually start with a lower trust factor than old, well-established ones. You can't skip the process.

"Trust factor and Premier rating are the same thing"

They are completely separate systems. Your Premier MMR/rank determines skill-based matchmaking; trust factor determines the behavioral quality of the pool you're drawn from. Both apply simultaneously.
