CS2 Active Drop Pool System Explained

The Weekly Care Package is a free weekly rewards system in Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) that lets Prime Status players choose 2 items from 4 random cosmetic drops—including weapon cases, skins, graffiti, and stickers—after earning enough XP to rank up.

Introduced on September 27, 2023, it replaced CS:GO's random drop system with a choice-based approach—weapon cases are now part of the level-up reward instead of random post-match drops, giving players more control over their weekly loot.

How The CS2 Drop System Works

Each Tuesday, at 8:00 P.M. CT (Central Time), the care package is reset, allowing you to get rewards. To be eligible for the weekly package, you need to meet the following criteria:

Prime Status: The care package is available only to the Prime users, so having it is a must.
Gather 5,000 XP: You have to level up once a week to get the Care Package.
Play in Matchmaking Mode: Practice matches do not give XP, which is required for leveling up. Competitive and Casual matches, on the other hand, boost your XP.

What Can Drop From The Weekly Drops in CS2?

The reward list consists of four items and will contain cases, skins, graffiti, and sticker capsules, though you can only select two out of the four options each week.

The system follows a predictable pattern that every competitive player should understand: One of the slots is always a case. The type of case depends on the pool from which it was dropped, which we’ll cover shortly. The remaining three slots are a mix of skins, graffiti, and stickers.

While most weekly drops usually aren’t worth very much, occasionally they can be surprisingly valuable.

Drop Pools | What is Rare?

You might have noticed that some cases drop more frequently than others. This is not random — it’s part of how CS2’s drop system works. Understanding how case drops work helps players make smarter decisions — whether you're opening cases for fun or looking to profit from the CS2 market.

All the cases in the game are split into three groups: Active Drop Pool, Rare Drop Pool, and No Drop Pool. Knowing the difference is essential when choosing the reward items.

Based on past trends, it’s believed that when a new case is added to the drop pool, an older one may be removed to keep the rotation fresh.

However, on December 18, 2024, Valve silently removed Rare Drop Pool cases from the Weekly Care Package rewards. There was no official announcement, and whether this change is permanent, temporary, or part of internal testing remains unclear.

For now, the future of rare case drops is uncertain, and all we can do is wait and see.

What to Choose?

The skins that are dropped are closely tied to the following skin collections.

With all these details discussed, there’s one question left. What to choose? What's the most expensive one?

If you're new to the CS2 market, you might be confused when choosing a reward from the care package. Most people suggest always taking the case, as some of them are pretty expensive and further increase in price. In addition, they offer an opportunity to drop a rare skin if opened.

But if there’s only one case, what else might be worth picking?

One thing that was added with CS2 is the ability to check the float value and the pattern of the skin before taking it. This way, you might spot an ultra-low float value or a rare pattern early on, which can skyrocket the skin’s price.

If you spot a skin with very low float value, you might wanna grab it and sell with a higher price tag.

Note that the weekly package never includes StatTrak or Souvenir items.

Keep in mind that while graffiti might not seem valuable at first glance, certain graffiti drops can actually stand out and add character to your inventory.

New Reward System: Passes

Lastly, we could not overlook the new reward system introduced with the Armory Update - Passes.

The Armory Pass in CS2 lets Prime players purchase a seasonal reward track. Each pass grants one free credit on activation and then converts every 300 XP you earn on official servers into another credit. Credits never expire, and you spend them in the Armory menu on exclusive skins, weapon charms, and even special cases.

You can stack up to five passes at once, so a single match can net you multiple credits. This way, the Armory Pass runs alongside your free weekly care package drops, offering a paid-but-play-to-earn avenue for cosmetics without replacing the standard drop system.
