CS2 Knife Odds: What Are the Chances of Getting a Knife?

When it comes to CS2 knife odds, the simple answer is brutal: your chances of getting a knife from a regular CS2 case are still only 0.26%, or roughly 1 in 385 cases.

This number has stayed almost unchanged for years. But after the October 23, 2025 Trade Up update, case openings are no longer the only path to a knife.

Still, if you want the classic unboxing experience, the odds of pulling a knife remain extremely low. So, let’s break down the case odds, what that 1 in 385 number actually means, and why it doesn’t guarantee you anything.

How CS2 Case Odds and Knife Odds Actually Work

According to the official item odds Valve had to reveal because of Chinese regulations, the chance of getting an Exceedingly Rare Special Item (meaning a knife or gloves) from any Counter-Strike container is 0.26%.

That translates to roughly 1 knife in 385 cases.

But this is where many players get it wrong. Opening 385 cases does not mean you are guaranteed a knife. Each case is an independent roll with the same 0.26% knife chance, and CS2 has no pity system.

So your past openings do not improve your future odds. Whether it’s your 1st case, your 385th, or your 1,300th, the chance is still 0.26% every single time.

Think of it like flipping a coin. Even if it lands on tails 10 times in a row, the next flip is still 50/50. Case openings work the same way.

StatTrak Knife Odds

If you want a StatTrak knife, the odds get even worse. StatTrak versions are usually treated as around 10% of drops, which means the chance of opening a StatTrak knife is roughly:

0.26% × 10% = 0.026%

So, in simple terms, the odds of getting a StatTrak knife in CS2 are around 1 in 3,846 cases.

And again, this does not mean you are guaranteed one after 3,846 cases. Just like regular knife odds, every case is an independent roll. You can get lucky early, or you can open thousands of cases and still miss.

Which CS2 Cases Can Drop Knives?

Out of the current 44 CS2 case and terminal-style containers, only 35 cases can drop knives. Another 7 cases plus 1 terminal are built around gloves instead, while 1 terminal does not contain rare special items at all.

So before opening anything, make sure the case you choose actually contains knives. Otherwise, your 0.26% rare item chance could end up being for gloves.

Besides that, the rare item pool also changes from case to case. CS2 currently has 21 different knife types, so if you are looking for a specific one, you need to check which cases can actually drop it.

For example, the Operation Breakout Weapon Case is very popular because it can only drop the Butterfly Knife, while other cases can include knives like Karambits, M9 Bayonets, Talon Knives, Skeleton Knives, Kukri Knives, and more.

So if you are opening cases only because you want a knife, check what rare items the case can actually drop first.

Should You Open Cases or Buy a Knife Directly?

If we're looking purely at the math, buying the knife directly is almost always the smarter financial move.

Opening cases is fun, but from a pure math point of view, it is a financial black hole. First, you have to buy the case itself if you don’t have it, and some CS2 cases are very expensive. Then you also need to pay $2.50 for the key, and after all that, you are still only rolling against a 0.26% chance.

In the long run, the expected return from opening cases is always negative (even for the cases with the best ROI or even if you stick to the cheapest cases).

And even if you do hit that rare drop, you are not guaranteed to get a high-value knife, a good finish, or the exact knife you wanted.

Many players forget this: pulling any knife is already extremely rare. Pulling a specific high-value knife, with a good finish and good float, is even rarer.

That’s why most veteran players will tell you that buying the knife directly is usually the better choice.

Realistic Ways to get a knife

As of 2026, realistically, your main paths to getting a knife in CS2 look like this:

Method 1: Buying directly

Buying directly is still the smartest move if you already have the money and want a specific knife.

But if you don’t want to spend money on a digital item, there is another free but much slower route: play regularly, collect weekly drops, and sell them over time until you have enough to get a knife.

The only thing you need first is a Prime account, since weekly drops are tied to Prime status.

I’ve personally tried this method in the past and works, but realistically, it can take around a year or more.

It’s the slowest route, but it’s one of the best ways to work toward a knife without opening cases or spending money directly.

Method 2: Direct Trading

Another route is skins trading. This means swapping skins with other players, usually based on market value, and slowly upgrading your inventory over time.

For example, you might trade a few smaller skins for one better item, then keep doing that until you eventually reach knife territory. The key here is patience, good market knowledge.

Still, this method comes with risk. Bad trades, price changes, and scams are all possible, so you need to be careful and avoid rushing into deals.

Method 3: Trade Up Contracts

After last year’s Trade Up update, players can now use 5 eligible Covert skins to receive 1 Exceedingly Rare item — either a knife or a pair of gloves, depending on the skins used.

The final item’s float is based on the floats of the skins you put in, just like normal trade-ups. StatTrak trade-ups follow the same logic.

Still, this does not mean you are guaranteed the exact knife you want. You are only guaranteed an Exceedingly Rare item from the possible rare item pool, and the value can vary a lot.

Covert skins also became much more expensive after the update, so check the possible outcomes, compare prices, and do the math carefully before doing a trade-up. If possible, use the cheapest covert skins that still point toward the rare item pool you want.
