How to Mute a Player in CS2
Competitive gaming requires clear communication across the team. And in CS2, voice chat helps players communicate, ask for backup, or, for example, recall a Dust 2 Callout to understand the enemy location. But in rare cases, teammates are toxic and really distracting, so knowing how to mute in CS2 can come in handy.
For those cases, Valve added several features so you have many ways to mute a player, and in this article, we are going to cover all of them. From using a scoreboard to console commands and right inside the CS2 in-game settings, this article will give you a broad understanding of how to mute in CS2.
How to Mute a Player in CS2 via the Scoreboard
For many, using the scoreboard is the simplest and fastest way to mute someone mid-match. The scoreboard only requires a few steps to mute the one who is annoying you:
- During the game, press the Tab key and hold it to open the Scoreboard.
- Find the player you want to mute, and left-click on the name.
- In the pop-up window, find the volume button and click it.

When the player’s nickname color in the scoreboard turns red, it is a confirmation that the player is muted and his voice is disabled. If you want to unmute the same player, repeat the steps and the color will switch back to white.

If you want to mute several players, you can either press the "mute all" button, or repeat the same steps for each player. However, note that muting everyone can hurt your competitive gaming experience where having information matters.
CS2 Mute Commands (Console Commands)
There are some console commands in CS2 that are connected to muting in CS2. The first step to using mute commands in CS2 is to have the Developer Console enabled, so you can freely use it. To enable it, you should navigate to Settings→Game→Enable Developer Console→Yes. After that, by clicking on the “~” key on your keyboard, you open the Developer Console to type in the following commands:
- cl_mute_all_but_friends_and_party 0 – mutes everyone except your friends and people you are in a party with while playing the match
- cl_mute_enemy_team 1 – mutes only the enemy team’s voice chat. To reverse it, just use “1” instead of “0”. (Not necessary in Competitive modes)
- ignoremsg – blocks all the text messages from both teams.
In CS:GO, we had commands like voice_enable 0/1, which let you mute the whole voice chat in the match while letting you see the text messages; however, now in CS2 they no longer work. Instead, use the ones provided, as they don’t differ that much.
For your convenience, you can try binding the CS2 mute command cl_mute_all_but_friends_and_party to a preferred key to quickly mute the voice chat during tense fights so you don't get distracted. To bind muting, use the following command in the Developer Console:
- bind “any key” “toggle cl_mute_all_but_friends_and_party 1 0”
How to Mute All Players in CS2 (Settings Menu)
If you are tired of muting everyone match after match, you can use the CS2 Settings Menu to automatically set muting rules for every game. To do that, follow these steps:
- Open CS2 Settings
- Go to the Game tab
- Click Communication
- Set Mute Enemy Team to Yes if you want to mute the enemy team
- Set Mute All But Friends to Yes (or Always) if you only want to hear people from your Friends List

The only drawback of these features is that they limit your information during the game, as you won’t be able to hear anyone. Muting the enemy team has no risk; however, muting your own enemy can make your in-game experience much more difficult, as even a rude teammate might still call out an enemy position, which can help you win a round.
For now, there is one last option that may be useful if you want to control the volume of the voice chat. Instead of muting everyone, you can just lower the voice chat volume and optimize it for your comfort.
- Open the CS2 game Settings Menu
- Find the Audio Settings
- Scroll down to the Voice section and adjust the Other Player Voice Volume as you wish
By default, the Other Player Voice Volume is set to 100%, so you can only lower it.
Notes To Take On How to Mute in CS2
Whether it comes to using the scoreboard, settings menu, or just console commands, knowing how to mute in CS2 can help you a lot. However, it is crucial to understand that muting toxic and disruptive teammates has a trade-off – no information. Think twice before muting your whole team, as a missed callout can cost you not only a life but a round. Mute smart, and let the game do the rest.
