Will Lake be Added to Wingman in CS2?
CS:GO de_lake is one of the most legendary Wingman maps released. It's the map where most players started their Counter-Strike journey. It was simple, beautiful, and popular.
However, with the release of CS2 in 2023, CS:GO Lake was removed from the game and, to this day, remains missing. And despite three years of Steam Forum floods and begging, Valve has stayed silent.
Today, we will look at Lake’s history and the main reasons some players believe it could return in CS2 sooner than you expect.
The History of Lake in CS:GO
Most people don't know this, but Lake was added to CS:GO right at the launch in 2012.
However, it was not a completely brand-new design. The map took inspiration from the Boathouse Finale location from Left 4 Dead. In CS:GO, Lake House and the shoreline were kept and slightly redesigned, while the overall dark atmosphere was shifted to a bright daytime.

And since Lake was only a Demolition map at the time, most of the community ignored it for years. Then in 2014, it made its way to the Arms Race mode, which gave a boost to Lake's popularity.
And things changed even more on May 23, 2017, when Valve released Operation Hydra. The update introduced the Wingman and Flying Scoutsman modes, and Lake suddenly became a perfect fit for both modes.
Its long and open layout turned it into the ultimate SSG 08 playground in Flying Scoutsman. And in Wingman, Lake offered something different. The map mixed close-range fights inside the house with long-range duels across the outside areas, making it one of the most memorable and enjoyable 2v2 maps.
That's why the community didn't forget about it and wanted a CS2 Lake. Nowadays, we have some hints about its return.
Is Lake Coming in CS2?
Several hints support the theory that Lake will return to CS2 in the upcoming updates, and here is each one:
1. Teased in Official CS2 Release Banner
Before the release of Counter-Strike 2, Valve used Lake as its official release banner and featured new lighting and water simulation effects using the new Source 2 engine. Although it was soon removed without a trace, the community noticed and didn't forget.
Because of that banner, many players expected the map to return with CS2. After all, it looked like Valve had already teased it. But three years have passed, and it still hasn't happened.

Some players believe the delay could be related to performance issues. Similar to Overpass, Lake may have been difficult to optimize in Source 2, especially because of its heavy use of water rendering.
As a huge part of the map is covered in water, it feels like one big water simulation with a cabin placed on top of it. Quite possibly, Source 2 had trouble handling that much water without affecting the FPS, and maybe Valve is searching for a solution for that. So, to the question “why did they remove Lake from CS2”, this is likely the answer.
2. Train Destination Board
Another reason some players believe Lake could return soon comes from an Easter egg found on the Train map.
There is a destination board written in Russian, showing the stations where the train has already been and where it is supposedly going next. Many players believe this works like a roadmap, with the visited stations pointing to maps already added to CS2 and the remaining stations hinting at future map releases in order.

The visited stations (released maps) are written in white, while the future destinations (possible releases) are written in black. In total, the board shows 14 stations, with the first 9 already reached. The tenth is Train itself, but the final four are where the theory becomes much more interesting:
Of course, these names are not always direct confirmations, but they give hope to the community. But also keep in mind that one phrase can point to different maps. For example, “Shoreline” could technically refer to Canals, St. Marc, Seaside, or other coastal-style maps. However, most players connect it to Lake because it's one of the most requested missing maps from CS.
The same logic applies to “Castle”. It could refer to the actual map Castle, but most players connect it to Cobblestone because of its iconic castle setting. And since Cobblestone has a much bigger fanbase, Valve would probably get far more attention by bringing Cobblestone back instead.
This Board Theory has never been confirmed by Valve. However, that's what keeps the community hoping for the release of Lake in CS.
3. 2024 EWC Showmatch
During the 2024 Esports World Cup (EWC) in Riyadh, Fallen and Neymar Jr. played a showmatch against varK and Msdossary on Lake.
Because it featured Lake, some players considered it another small hint that Valve might be preparing the map for a future CS2 release.

Of course, nothing happened after that, so this is not the strongest piece of evidence. But the fact that Lake was used in such a big event may also suggest that a playable CS2 version of the map already exists, or that it is at least close to being ready.
When Is Lake Coming to CS2?
For now, there is no official release date for Lake in CS2. However, if we look at the Train Easter egg roadmap, we can speculate that Lake could be one of the next maps to return. A possible release window could be anywhere from mid-to-late 2026.
But until Valve officially brings the map back into the rotation, players can still play Lake through the Steam Workshop and community servers, where several community-made versions are already available for Wingman.
FAQ
Why is Lake not in CS2 Wingman?
There’s no official explanation to why they removed Lake from CS, but the community suspects that it has to do with the way the map Lake is built. A big portion of the map is just water, which, as we’ve seen on Overpass, might cause FPS drops. As a result, people speculate that Valve are experimenting with ways to use water without killing your PC’s performance.
Is Lake coming to CS2?
Most probably, YES! Small hints and dataminer findings suggest that Valve are working on a Source 2 version of the map. The CS2 release banner and the destination board on Train are enough for the community to keep its hope.
Lake’s Return to CS2: Release Date
Although no official information was published by Valve, the community speculates that mid-to-late 2026 is an optimal window for the map’s release. However, that’s only a theory, not something for sure.
