Esports World Cup 2025 Results: Surprises No One Saw Coming
The Esports World Cup 2025 CS2 tournament ended with one of the most shocking results in Counter-Strike history, delivering upsets, highlights, and surprises that no one saw coming.
As the last event of the World Cup, CS2 also put an end to the Club Championships, with the winner taking home a staggering $7 million prize.
Underdogs have risen to the top, while the strongest fell in the beginning. If you missed any part of it, here's everything you need to know.
The MongolZ Claim Historic CS2 Victory
The MongolZ are a team that was not heard of until the recent events.
Well, their history goes back to 2015, when they played mostly in C-Tier events and qualifiers. Even with constant roster changes, they rarely broke past the mid-level, often hovering around B-Tier and occasionally making runs in smaller A-Tier events.
It wasn’t until the 2024 Shanghai Major that The MongolZ started to emerge as a serious contenders. And despite their loss, they made their transition to the S-Tier. After that, they consistently showed up in the top 3-4 in all the tournaments they attended.
Despite losing the grand final of Austin Major, they earned their spot among the fan favorites. Later, they proved their dominance over Team Vitality in the Blast Bounty Season 2, but still lost to Spirit.
The EWC gave them another chance to shine, and they've made the most of it. Not only did they overpowered Vitality once again, but also swept Aurora 3:0 in the Grand Final and won their country its first Tier-1 trophy in CS2.
Sodbayar "Techno" Munkhbold earned the first MVP of his career, ending the tournament with a rating of 1.39.
Aurora: XANTARES At His Peak
"XANTARES peek" is back, and it was deadly.
Aurora gave this tournament everything, played at their peak, and made the fans scream in amazement. They pulled unbelievable clutches, made the impossible possible, and won over FaZe, HEROIC, and Falcons.
Wicadia, MAJ3R, and Woxic saved the game countless times, but that was not enough to beat The MongolZ and their flawless match.
"They were way better individually and as a team," said MAJ3R, the IGL of Aurora. The community began joking that The MongolZ are like a team of Asian donks, each one too overpowered.
Falcons: Victory Secured With a Loss
After their loss at IEM Cologne, Falcons decided to skip one event to prepare for the EWC, and the change was apparent.
Their first match was against G2, the former team of NiKo and m0NESY, where they easily took both maps.
After that, they overpowered MOUZ, a team that won over Vitality in Cologne. But something was wrong in the match against Aurora.
Kyousuke, the newest member of Falcons, the donk 2.0., had a negative rating in both maps. In the interview after the match, he complained about having high ping during the game, but there was nothing he could do but continue playing.
Nevertheless, Falcons finished the tournament in third place after a 1:2 victory over Vitality.
Despite not winning the CS2 tournament, Team Falcons, as an organization, won the Club Championship and the $7 million. This is an achievement that many organizations strive to achieve.
Vitality Are Not The Same
For the last three tournaments, Vitality struggled to get past the Semi-Finals.
Even the team accepts that they started to play worse after the Major. Team’s rifler FlameZ said in the recent interview, "We dropped our level. It's obviously tough to keep it up."
After a flawless season start and being considered the kings of the CS2, fans now start to doubt their status as the best team. Nevertheless, we're only in the middle of the season, and there are many opportunities for Vitality to get back on top.
Early Exits and Upsets
Team Spirit: After two consecutive tournament victories, many fans believed that Spirit is on a win streak, even a better one than Vitality. However, they got knocked out in the first match by a HEROIC, whose rifler t1NR will soon join Spirit.
The reason for their quick loss, according to donk, was having three players seriously ill and with high temperatures. We hope that the roster recovers until the beginning of BLAST Open London, where they are set to compete against FlyQuest in the first match.
Natus Vincere: Despite winning the EWC in 2024, NAVI was also quickly thrown out of the competition by 3DMAX. The team seemed to be out of resonance with each other, making them lose in the first game.
Next Event - Next Chance
Only a few days after the end of EWC, another event by BLAST.tv will start. BLAST Open London 2025 will kick off on August 27, with the first matches already set up.
Although The MongolZ and Falcons are not on the participants list, we will see the battle between other Tier-1 teams with Tier-2 teams.
If EWC taught us anything, it's that no dynasty is safe and no underdog should be ignored. London may be just days away, but expectations have already been turned upside down.
